Mental Health
On a transformative evening at the Millennium Forum, we had the privilege of attending the launch of What Makes a ‘REAL’ Man, a poignant and raw collection of stories and poems written by members of the Men’s Support Group. This book is a testament to the power of vulnerability, shared experience, and courageous conversations, all contributing to a healthier and more connected community.
Challenging Stereotypes Through Storytelling
The stories and poems in this collection offer deep insights into the challenges men face—grappling with bullying, loneliness, addiction, grief, and trauma, as well as the strength it takes to find recovery, hope, and joy. As our CEO Edel highlighted during the event, “These stories came straight from the hearts of men just like our brothers, sons, husbands, workmates, and neighbours. Ordinary men telling extraordinary stories.”
Edel also reflected on how this book challenges traditional stereotypes of masculinity. “From birth, men are often expected to be strong, suppress emotion, and avoid vulnerability. But this book powerfully redefines strength, showing that true courage lies in confronting pain and embracing openness.”
A Space for Connection and Compassion
The Men’s Support Group at Claude’s Café provides more than a meeting place—it’s a haven where men from all walks of life can share their stories, find support, and build meaningful connections. As one participant put it, “All the men have one thing in common—reaching out, receiving, and giving, seasoned with openness. Egos don’t belong here, and humility is strong.”
This ethos is reflected in the stories shared in What Makes a ‘REAL’ Man. From the masks men wear to portray success, as described in “Smile for the Camera,” to the strength of those who lift others over life’s rough terrain, each piece offers a unique perspective on what it truly means to be a man.
Building Hope and Inspiring Change
The launch event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of creating spaces where men feel safe to express themselves. As Edel noted, “This book is proof that change begins with honest conversations. Bravery isn’t about hiding pain, but about confronting it.”
By sharing their stories, these men have not only lifted a weight from their own shoulders but have also opened doors for others to follow. The message is clear: vulnerability is not a weakness; it is a strength that can inspire connection, understanding, and hope.
